RSXC FAQ

The Ice Air RSXC Series is a family of Cold Climate Packaged Terminal Heat Pumps (PTHPs) designed for high-efficiency, all-electric heating and cooling in challenging climates—combining VRF-like performance with PTAC-style convenience.

RSXC uses advanced VRF technology with enhanced vapor injection (EVI) compressors to modulate capacity in real time and extend heat-pump operation into much colder temperatures than typical PTAC systems.

RSXC PTHPs are commonly used in hotel/hospitality, multifamily, senior living, student housing, and other buildings that prefer through-the-wall packaged units with room-by-room control.

RSXC units are designed to fit a standard wall sleeve measuring 42" wide × 16" high, supporting both retrofit and new construction.

The chassis is concealed by a steel enclosure with a designer-grade baked powder-coat finish for durability and an upgraded appearance compared to typical plastic fronts.

Yes. RSXC offers outside-air options for room conditioning (performance table lists 60 CFM outside airflow per model).

RSXC heating performance is laboratory tested and certified down to –5°F, with a theoretical heat-pump operating lower limit of –25°F ambient.

Examples (models 8RSXC09 / 8RSXC13 / 8RSXC18):

  • 10°F: 6,600 / 7,700 / 11,600 BTU/h (COP 2.20 / 2.14 / 2.02)
  • 5°F: 6,100 / 6,900 / 10,600 BTU/h (COP 1.98 / 1.91 / 1.93)
  • –5°F: 5,500 / 6,400 / 8,100 BTU/h (COP 1.74 / 1.62 / 1.60)

For 8RSXC09 / 8RSXC13 / 8RSXC18:

  • Cooling Capacity: 9,200 / 12,500 / 16,300 BTU/h
  • Cooling Range: 6,300–11,800 / 6,500–14,900 / 7,300–18,000 BTU/h
  • EER: 12.1 / 11.1 / 10.0
  • Heating Capacity: 10,300 / 13,700 / 17,900 BTU/h
  • Heating Range: 8,700–12,600 / 9,000–14,700 / 10,900–19,300 BTU/h
  • COP (heating): 4.1 / 3.7 / 3.0
  • HSPF2: 9.6 / 9.5 / 9.0

Electric heat is optional. Units can operate independently to –5°F and below, but supplemental heat is recommended for extreme conditions. When installed, it may engage automatically around –5°F or be controlled manually.

RSXC achieves industry-leading sound levels through sound-insulated construction and variable-speed operation, making it suitable for noise-sensitive spaces.

RSXC models use variable-speed compressors to modulate capacity based on room demand, improving comfort stability and reducing short-cycling.

Enhanced vapor injection (EVI) compressors help RSXC operate effectively at extreme low temperatures, maintaining stronger heat output and efficiency where conventional PTACs struggle.

Each RSXC unit comes standard with a Habitat Wireless Thermostat with smart control capabilities for more precise temperature management.

Yes. App-based smart control is available with a smart app module (purchased separately).

When electric heat is included, control options typically include:

  • Manual trigger switch to engage resistance heat, or
  • Automatic changeover at about –5°F (±3°F) with a manual override switch

RSXC uses R32 “green” refrigerant to support higher efficiency and reduced environmental impact versus legacy refrigerants.

Yes. RSXC complies with NEEP Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump (ccASHP) efficiency requirements and is identified as suitable for cold-climate heating electrification.

RSXC provides energy savings that support projects seeking to satisfy NYC Local Law 97 and other carbon-reduction regulations, and can help meet goals tied to green building rating systems such as LEED®.

Rebates, incentives, and tax credits may be available through state, federal, and local utility programs. (Availability varies by location.)
